Test Out Procedures

Test Out Procedures for Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and Physical Science

  1. The purpose of the test out option, or credit by competency, is for a student to further advance in a subject area during their high school experience. It is NOT to complete the required six math or science credits needed for graduation as quickly as possible.
  2. A student may test out of a course only before the student has attempted the course during the school year. Testing out of a course is not a method for credit-recovery.
  3. Eligible students must successfully complete both semesters of the prerequisite course with at least a B.
  4. Testing out is an independent endeavor with little support or contact with teachers who may not be available for help due to family commitments, vacation plans, etc. There will be time during the summer on Wednesday mornings for students to come in and work on their course with mentors.
  5. Students will be provided with resources to help them independently study and prepare for the post-test.
  6. The test out application form must be completed and submitted to the Boone High School counseling office before Tuesday May 5, 2026. Application forms are available in the BHS counseling office.
  7. The pre-test opportunity has changed for the 2026 summer test out opportunity. Instead of students completing an optional pre-test before summer begins, they will have access to pre-tests for each unit during the summer. It will be included in the resources provided to students.
  8. All post-tests need to be taken in person with a proctor.
  9. All assessments (including the pre-tests for math courses) need to be taken in person with a proctor.
  10. Students must complete all post-tests before Friday, August 7, 2026. When a student is ready to take the post-test, they should contact Kristina Greenfield (kgreenfield@boone.k12.ia.us) at the high school to arrange a time. The preferred time for students to take a post-test is during Wednesday mornings in the BHS Library; however, other times can be scheduled individually with Ms. Greenfield.
