Course Description: Aligned with the 2026 Iowa Academic Standards, this course provides a comprehensive study of the functions and structure of U.S. government at federal, state, and local levels. Students will analyze the founding Enlightenment principles and compare the American democratic republic to alternative models, including monarchies and communist regimes. A specific focus is placed on the sovereign Meskwaki Nation tribal government and the Iowa Constitution. Students will explore their inalienable rights, the role of the Bill of Rights in protecting those liberties, and the core responsibilities of informed citizens, from voting procedures to participating in the legislative process.
